Why Some Pet Breeds Live Dramatically Longer Than Others (And It’s Not Just Genetics)
Age doesn’t look the same across dog breeds. One dog might still be racing around the yard and acting like a puppy at 10 years old, while another could already be entering its senior years. The difference can be surprisingly large, which is why veterinarians often use different expectations for different breeds when assessing a dog’s stage of life.
For a long time, genetics seemed like the obvious explanation. While genes play an important role, researchers have found that several other factors can influence a pet’s lifespan. Body size, weight, facial structure, preventive care, and even dental health can all affect longevity. Together, these factors help explain why some breeds routinely live into their teens while others tend to have much shorter lives.
First Of All: Size

Research consistently shows that smaller dogs live longer than larger ones, often by several years. While most dogs live between 10 and 13 years, many small breeds regularly live longer. Chihuahuas often reach 14 to 16 years, and Shih Tzus can live as long as 18 years.
Large and giant breeds face a different reality. Great Danes typically live seven to 10 years, while Irish Wolfhounds average six to eight years.
Scientists are still studying why this happens. One leading theory points to growth rates. Large dogs grow rapidly and appear to age faster. Research involving tens of thousands of dogs found that bigger breeds experience age-related decline at an accelerated pace, making them more vulnerable to serious illnesses earlier in life.
The Impact of Body Design

A dog’s appearance can affect lifespan in ways many owners never consider. A major study in the United Kingdom that examined nearly 600,000 dogs found that flat-faced breeds face a significantly greater risk of shorter lifespans. French Bulldogs averaged 9.8 years, while Pugs averaged 11.6 years.
Breathing difficulties play a major part in this. Breeds with shortened snouts are more likely to struggle with respiratory issues, overheating, and related health complications. Researchers found that flat-faced dogs had a 40 percent higher risk of shorter lifespans than other breeds.
Meanwhile, small dogs with longer noses tended to live the longest. The study found that body size and facial structure often work together, creating major differences in life expectancy across breeds.
Genetics Are Important, But They’re Only Part of the Story
Inherited health conditions can absolutely shape a dog’s future, but genetics doesn’t explain everything. Mixed-breed dogs are often thought to have an advantage because broader genetic diversity can reduce the risk of certain inherited diseases. At the same time, some research has found that lifespan differences between purebred and mixed-breed dogs are smaller than many people assume.
What researchers increasingly agree on is that responsible breeding practices are crucial. Health screenings, genetic testing, and maintaining healthy breeding populations can reduce the risk of passing along serious conditions. In other words, two dogs with similar genetics can end up with very different outcomes depending on the health decisions made long before they were born.
The Everyday Habits That Add Years

Some of the biggest influences on lifespan have little to do with breed, and weight is one of the most important. Studies have shown that overweight dogs face higher risks of joint disease, breathing problems, certain cancers, and other health complications. One study found that Labrador Retrievers maintained at a healthy body condition lived about two years longer than overweight dogs.
Dental care also appears to play a larger part than many pet owners realize. Research involving more than 169,000 dogs found that annual professional dental cleanings were associated with nearly a 20 percent reduction in mortality risk.
Routine veterinary care may be less exciting than shopping for toys or treats, but it often makes the biggest difference. Vaccinations, parasite prevention, bloodwork, and early disease detection can help catch problems before they become far more difficult to manage.
