The Worst Cat Breeds for Every Zodiac Sign
Dog people seem to be convinced that a cat is a cat. Cat people know what a load of nonsense that is. Saying all cat breeds are the same would be like saying a teacup poodle is the same as a French bulldog.
Each cat breed has unique characteristics, and some pet parents gravitate more toward certain feline personalities than others. Since our horoscope sign influences our compatibility with other humans, it's safe to say it impacts which pets we're into as well. Here's which cat breeds you're likely to clash with based on your zodiac sign.
Aries: Sphynx Cat
Aries dates: March 21-April 19
Fiery Aries folks aren't mean, but they are straightforward and painfully blunt. For this reason, the sweet and sensitive Sphynx cat isn't an ideal match. They need to be nurtured and cared for more than most cat breeds due to their almost complete lack of fur. They're sensitive to heat, cold, sunlight and lack of attention, and an Aries owner is more likely to take to a more hardy, adventurous cat breed.
Plus, Aries is a fire sign, and you know what Sphynx cats are crazy about? Water. They're one of the few cat breeds that love bath time and play in water for fun. Entertaining for sure, but maybe not the best match for a bold, brassy Aries.
A better cat breed choice: Bengal
Taurus: Cornish Rex
Taurus dates: April 20-May 20
Taurus is an earth sign, and they tend to clash with airy Aquarius. Taurus is all about stability and comfort, while Aquarius is playful and innovative, verging on chaotic. The Cornish Rex breed exemplifies this same energy. They love to have fun, and they're highly vocal and curious.
For the calm, even-tempered Taurus who wants to stay home and snuggle, an energetic, chatty Kathy of a cat that constantly knocking cups off the counter isn't the best choice.
A better cat breed choice: American Shorthair
Gemini: Bombay
Gemini dates: May 21-June 20
Geminis are explorers at heart, always changing and entertaining new ideas. Scorpios, however, value consistency and loyalty above novelty. Bombay cats are a lot like Scorpios in that regard. They're intense and mysterious, and they prefer to share their secretive souls with a trusted human they can rely on.
They aren't big fans of change. If the ever-curious Gemini decides to bring home a new furry friend, move to a new part of town or change their work hours, a Bombay cat will respond with either annoyance or full-blown jealousy.
A better cat breed choice: Chausie
Cancer: Bengal
Cancer dates: June 21-July 22
What are Cancer signs great at? Being emotive, intuitive and nurturing. Being an adventurous go-getter isn't really their speed, but that's what a Bengal cat expects, nay, demands. Bengals are vivacious and quick as a whip. They've been known to learn how to use pet-talking buttons to communicate their desires to their owners, including asking to go on walks like a dog.
While a Cancer is plenty empathetic enough to go the extra mile for a sweet, high-energy Bengal kitty, they're likely to find it draining living with one. These cats are always on the go and prefer to be mentally and physically challenged daily, or they'll start exploring (destroying, really) every cabinet and countertop like they own the place.
A better cat breed choice: Somali
Leo: Birman
Leo dates: July 23-Aug. 22
Leos are known for being confident, attention-loving and ambitious to a fault. They're lions, after all, and the gentle Birman cat breed won't be able to keep up.
Birmans are built for a lazy life of luxury and love. They have no intention of entertaining their owners with dramatic leaps and kitten-like antics. They're big-boned, long-haired lap cats that stick like glue to one carefully chosen human. Around everyone else, they're quiet and shy. They need a calmer, more compassionate owner. A Pisces, perhaps?
A better cat breed choice: Abyssinian
Virgo: Abyssinian
Virgo dates: Aug. 23-Sept. 22
Virgos are humble creatures who prefer a life of predictability. They're methodical. Practical. We need Virgos to keep the world running, but we also need the contrasting nature of the social, charismatic Libra. Abyssinian cats are far more like Libras than Virgos. They're outgoing and chatty, and they crave the presence of new guests, new toys and new experiences.
The predictable routine of the hardworking, ever-reliable Virgo might not be exciting enough for an Abyssinian, but who knows? Maybe the extroverted breed will push Virgo peeps out of their comfort zones.
A better cat breed choice: Norwegian Forest Cat
Libra: Persian
Libra dates: Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Building on what we just mentioned about Libras, they're major extroverts. They're very friendly, and they're often involved in social justice or other community-centered fields. As wonderful as that is, the social nature of Libras goes against the shy, reclusive personality of most Persian cats.
Persians are soft-spoken and a little fussy. They prefer to live a pampered life with a fastidious Virgo who will keep their bowl squeaky clean and won't invite over too many unexpected guests. Peace and quiet is the trademark of the Persian breed, not parties and people.
A better cat breed choice: Ragdoll
Scorpio: Siamese
Scorpio dates: Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Scorpios are tough, determined and ambitious. The flip side of these strong qualities isn't quite as pretty. Scorpios can also be controlling and competitive, not to mention stubborn. With a Siamese cat, Scorpios have met their match.
Siamese cats are the most vocal breed known to the feline world. They're extremely bright and inquisitive. While they adore spending time with their owners and demand plenty of attention, they have minds of their own. They're not likely to obey commands, even from an irritated Scorpio. The combined stubbornness of a Scorpio-Siamese pairing is a recipe for frustration.
A better cat breed choice: Burmese
Sagittarius: Ragdoll Cat
Sagittarius dates: Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Sagittarius can be summed up in three words: independent, adventurous and fearless. Sag babies are more likely to remodel a van and travel the country than settle for a quiet, predictable life. They can be on the reckless side, but they make up for it with open-mindedness, generosity and honesty.
Ragdoll cats, on the other hand, are total homebodies. It's recommended that ragdoll cats remain exclusively indoors because they're so friendly that some lack the instinct to fight back if confronted by another animal. To a Sagittarius, having a living pillow as a pet is only cute for about 10 minutes before they're out searching for a more exciting companion.
A better cat breed choice: Burmilla
Capricorn: Savannah Cat
Capricorn dates: Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Capricorns are the biggest overachievers of the bunch. They're disciplined and sincere, but they can also be too serious at times. Think set in their ways, rigid and cynical. Those qualities can result in a pet owner who takes immaculate care of their companion, but a Capricorn won't have much patience for messiness and destructive behavior.
Savannah cats don't intend on being destructive, but they're descended from a cross between a domestic Siamese cat and a wild African serval. They are domesticated, but they retain more of their wild personality than most domestic cat breeds. They're large and can easily scale bookshelves, the fridge and anything else in the house. Nothing is safe from a Savannah cat, and without plenty of activity, they're prone to wreaking havoc on a Capricorn's carefully organized personal space.
A better cat breed choice: Korat cat
Aquarius: Russian Blue
Aquarius dates: Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Aquarius is an altruistic, optimistic sign with a quirky sense of humor. They can be on the eccentric side, and the Russian Blue cat is a tad too regal to appreciate this. Russian Blues are descended from royalty, literally. They were bred in the manors of Russian Czars, and even in an apartment, they expect to be treated like queens or kings.
These cats are quite picky about everything from their meal times to the state of their favorite perches. The unpredictable nature of Aquarius folks is a big turn-off for a Russian Blue, and Aquariuses will probably find Russian Blues too uppity and exacting to connect with.
A better cat breed choice: Birman
Pisces: Selkirk Rex
Pisces dates: Feb. 19-March 20
Pisces is the sign of passionate, imaginative creators. They're incredibly sensitive to the feelings of others, and their adaptability is a huge point in their favor. Still, every sign has at least a couple of weak points. Pisces people can be impractical, careless and scatterbrained. Caring for a high-maintenance Selkirk rex is a tall order.
Selkirk rex cats have a uniquely wiry, wavy coat that requires a great deal of care. It's thick and requires regular brushing and bathing to avoid the development of itchy yeast infections. Selkirk rex cats with light-colored fur might even need to wear sunblock on their ears in warmer months. For an easily distracted Pisces, a breed with fewer coat-care requirements is a safer bet.
A better cat breed choice: Ocicat
